Can we spread some awareness about SEASONED firewood, please??

There are a lot of people out there selling wood they're calling seasoned, but its really not. If you need to burn it right away, here's what you need to know.

What does SEASONED firewood mean?
- Simply put, seasoned wood is cut and split wood that has been left out in the weather to air-dry, so moisture can evaporate from it.
- The amount of time that has passed since the wood was cut/split doesn't actually matter. The size of the pieces, species of wood, and environmental factors will dictate how long the seasoning process will take.
- What MATTERS is the wood has a low INTERNAL moisture content.
- The target number is 20% or less INTERNAL moisture content. We actually crack our wood open and test it before we sell it to confirm that's where it is. Using a moisture meter in the end grain or elsewhere on the outside of the wood won't tell you what the internal moisture content is.

Why it matters?
- Seasoned wood provides a better experience (easier to light, more heat, less smoke). If you're burning in a fire pit, fire place or small/modern wood stove, its more critical to have fully seasoned wood for the best experience. Wood with even a 25% internal moisture will sizzle, smolder, and burn poorly until the moisture is cooked out of it.
- Seasoned wood burns cleaner - seasoned wood ensures higher chimney temperatures which reduces dangerous creosote buildup in your chimney.
- If you're burning in an big old-style wood stove, or outdoor stove, the moisture content may be less of a concern.

How do you tell if wood is seasoned without a moisture meter?
- Does it feel heavy? The heavier it is, the more likely it still has a lot of moisture in it already.
- Clap the flat surfaces of two pieces of wood together (or drop a piece of wood on the pavement). Is it a loud, percussive clank? Or a dull thud? A thud is an indication higher moisture content.
- Ask when the wood was split. Expect a minimum of 5 seasons for oak, 3 seasons for most other types. Oak cut in Fall of 2024 should be ready Winter 2025. Maple cut in January is ready in the Fall of the same year.
